Reporting
The two fundamental approaches to designing a Reporting System:
- Build a database and build the system on top
- Design your reports and build the system underneath
Now that IT/IS is entering its Industrialisation Phase, the second approach is preferred. However, the business will only design the reports, building and managing the system underneath is entirely the responsibility of the Cloud Operator.
The effectiveness and value of reporting lies in identifying the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's). At the highest level there are only two; Revenue and Cost.
How you drive these defines the lower level KPI's and will ultimately determine the success of the business.
The danger of Cloud based reporting systems is that it's easy to off-load many different requirements to a cloud operator, or even let the operator do "the discovery". This can result in hefty recurring costs per item.
First, first make better use of the systems you already have, then consolidate your remaining needs before you enter The Cloud
